Marcus Rashford (Manchester, England, October 31, 1997) is a British footballer who plays as a forward for F. C. Barcelona of the Spanish Primera División, on loan from Manchester United F. C. of England.
A “Red Devils” player since the age of seven, he scored two goals against FC Midtjylland in his first-team debut in the UEFA Europa League in February 2016 and in his Premier League debut against Arsenal three days later. He also scored in his first Manchester derby and his first League Cup and UEFA Champions League match. With United, he won two FA Cups, two League Cups, one Community Shield, and one UEFA Europa League.
He scored in his debut for the England national team in May 2016, becoming the youngest English player to score in his first international match. He participated in Euro 2016 as the youngest player in the tournament, and the 2018 World Cup.
Marcus Rashford was born on October 31, 1997, in Manchester, and was raised in the Wythenshawe area of the city. He has Saint Kitts ancestry because his grandmother was born on the islands of Saint Kitts. He has two brothers named Dwaine Maynard and Dane, both of whom represent the player professionally. He also has a footballer cousin, Lois Maynard, who plays as a midfielder for Stockport County.
Rashford began playing football at the age of five as a goalkeeper for the Fletcher Moss Rangers team, and cited former Manchester United youth goalkeeper Tim Howard as his idol. He trained for a week at Manchester City before joining the Manchester United academy at the age of seven, despite having attracted interest from other teams like Everton or Liverpool. Rashford stated that his brothers were key to his decision to choose United.
In 2012, he was part of the Manchester United U-15 team that finished runners-up in an annual youth championship. In 2014, The Guardian named him as one of the most promising young stars in the next generation of the Premier League, stating that “his all-round style of football gives him many opportunities to go all the way.”
By 2019, United appointed former player and club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjær as the new team manager. In the Norwegian manager’s first game, Rashford contributed a goal to the team’s victory against Cardiff City. United’s performance would suddenly grow, climbing up their league position with the Englishman scoring five goals between late December and early January.
On February 2, he was announced as Manchester United’s Player of the Month for January, in addition to winning the team’s Goal of the Month award for his goal against Tottenham in the 1-0 victory. A day later, he reached one hundred official Premier League games at just 21 years old, being the second youngest to do so after Ryan Giggs. In that match, he scored the winning goal at the King Power Stadium against Leicester City (0-1).
For his impressive performances in January, Rashford won his first Premier League Player of the Month award, being the first player after Ibrahimović in December 2016 to win the award again. On March 6, he secured passage to the Champions League quarterfinals, from a penalty in added time, against PSG (1-3), in addition to contributing to Romelu Lukaku’s rebound goal after his long-range shot.
Thanks to the team’s great performance since Solskjær’s announcement, the club announced him as permanent manager, and Rashford scored again in the Norwegian manager’s first game in his new role in a 2-1 victory over Watford.
2019-20 Season
The following season began with Rashford signing a new four-year contract with Manchester United, staying at the club until 2023. At the start of the league, Rashford scored a brace against Chelsea in a 4-0 thrashing. By September 2019, Solskjaer stated that he was not concerned about Rashford’s poor form, as he was not performing well and scoring few goals for the team.
After scoring a goal in the draw against Liverpool, which ended their winning streak in the league, Rashford entered the best scoring streak of his entire career, scoring 16 goals in 20 consecutive games. However, his excellent form ended due to a back injury Marcus sustained in an FA Cup match against Wolves, which kept him off the field for several months.
He returned in time to finish the season thanks to the break caused by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. On July 16, he scored his 17th Premier League goal against Crystal Palace, equaling his combined tally from his previous two seasons. By the end of the season, Rashford was voted third for the FWA Footballer of the Year Award, and received the PFA Merit Award.
2020-21 Season
On September 26, he scored his first goal of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion in a 3-2 victory. On October 20, he again scored a winning goal in Paris against Paris Saint-Germain in a 2-1 victory in the Champions League group stage. In his next Champions League match, he scored the first hat-trick of his career in a 5-0 thrashing of RB Leipzig coming off the bench, being the second player to do so in Manchester United’s history, after his coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when the Norwegian managed to do so in a match for the 1998-99 edition of the Premier League.
On July 18, 2023, he renewed his contract with Manchester United until June 30, 2028. During his career, he scored 124 goals in 359 matches with the “Red Devils,” highlighting his 30 goals the previous season and winning the “Sir Matt Busby” Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards.
Rashford to Barcelona
On July 23, 2025, he was loaned for the second time, this time to F. C. Barcelona until June 2026 in an agreement that included a purchase option. He made his debut four days later on the Asian preseason tour in a 3-1 victory over Japanese Vissel Kobe.
